Last night, the 22nd MOBO Awards 2017 held at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, United Kingdom. The ceremony saw Stormzy add to his growing awards haul as he picked up three out of a possible five gongs at this year’s MOBO Awards 2017.
The MOBO Awards 2017 which took place on November 29 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds. It is the same venue as the 2015 event, and the event kicks off at 7:30pm. This year is the awards’ 22nd outing since the MOBO Organisation’s inception in 1996.
The event was hosted by Maya Jama and Marvin Humes. Afrobeat star Davido, US star Cardi B, Krept & Konan, Stefflon Don, Yungen and Yxng Bane performed on the night. Britain’s Got Talent 2017 winner, Tokio Myers did a special rendition of Ed Sheeran’s Bloodstream, before introducing the B Positive Choir for a special performance. Craig David, the singer, who performed at the ceremony alongside Clean Bandit and Izzy Bazu, won the best male act award – his first victory since taking home three awards in 2001.
Lady Leshurr was awarded Best Female Act.
The unglamorously named Dave won the Best Newcomer, after a year in which he has released everything from pop-rap tracks with Drake to hard-edged grime.
Stormzy has capped off an incredible year by winning three Mobo awards on Wednesday evening. The London grime star won Best Male Act, Best Album for Gang Signs And Prayer, and Best Grime Act; he has previously won the latter award twice before in 2014 and 2015.
J Hus took home Best Song for Did You See.
Mist took home best video for Hot Property, a big-budget affair in which the Birmingham MC swigs premium vodka on an Icelandic lava field.
Giggs, the gravel-voiced MC who has recently collaborated with US rappers including Drake, Young Thug, and 2 Chainz, and reached No 2 in the UK charts with his two most recent albums, won best hip-hop act.
The Nigerian artist Wizkid beat a strong field including Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar to net the best international artist prize.
Davido who also performed at the Mobo Awards 2017 also took home the Best African Act Award.
The MOBO Awards 2017 crowned Damian Marley as Best Reggae Act.
Drummer, composer, and producer Moses Boyd has won the Best Jazz Act award in this year’s MOBO awards.
Volney Morgan & New-Ye won “Best Gospel Act” (in association with Premier Gospel), marking their first MOBO Award win.
