Selena Gomez delivers emotional, tearful speech at Billboard Awards. Selena Gomez broke down in tears as she accepted the Woman of the Year award at the 2017 Billboard Women in the Music event in Hollywood on Thursday. Billboard’s ‘Woman of the Year’ award is part of Billboard’s Women in Music awards ceremony. The prestigious event seeks to honor some of the most important female voices in music today, both in front of and behind the scenes, year on year.
It looked like the pop star’s hard work was not for nothing, as she joins the ranks of fellow musical superstars—Lady Gaga, Madonna, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift—as Billboard’s 2017 Woman of the Year.

Francia Raisa — the actress who donated her kidney to Gomez — presented her with the honor.
“When I found out I was a match for Selena, I didn’t think twice about it,” she said of her kidney donation.
Selena Gomez is killing it. She may not have released an album this year but from her huge hit collaborations, ‘It Ain’t Me’ and ‘Wolves’, to her experimental solo singles, ‘Bad Liar’ and ‘Fetish’, it’s safe to say that the superstar has dominated 2017.
Not to mention she’s also put her activism front and center, discussing her lupus and recent kidney transplant just this week on Good Morning America, taking part in telethons for hurricane relief efforts and also standing up for DACA on Instagram.Taking all of this into account, it is no surprise that Selena is Billboard’s ‘Woman of the Year’ 2017.
Selena Gomez broke down in tears as she accepted the Woman of the Year award at the 2017 Billboard Women in the Music event in Hollywood on Thursday.
“Honestly, I couldn’t be more grateful for the position that I’ve been given in my career, from 7 to 14 to now,” the tearful actress-singer said. “I want people to know that I respect the platform that I have so greatly.
“I’ve never felt this proud to be a woman in the industry than I do today, and that’s because I actually feel comfortable with every single woman that has encouraged me,” she continued, stressing how crucial it is that women’s voices are finally being heard. “I’m so grateful for all the older women who have lifted all of us up because I couldn’t be here without any of you,” she said.
Although Gomez was honoured to be awarded the title, she believes her friend Francia Raisa, who donated one of her kidney’s to the vocalist in a life-saving operation over the summer, which was needed as a result of her battle with Lupus – a condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue – is more deserving of the accolade because she “saved her life”.During the event, the Disney alum and The Secret Life of the American Teenager alum sat together at a front-and-center table. An eyewitness tells Us that Gomez appeared to be in good spirits throughout the evening. She gave a standing ovation to performer Camila Cabello and also clapped for Kelly Clarkson and Ed Sheeran.
